Chief Horticulturist
(Graded as Chief Agricultural Development Technician)
(Salary Level 8)
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

This is the ideal career challenge for a person who is passionate about plants and the outdoors, and who would like to join a team of specialists focused on preserving and propagating our national plant heritage for display in the Garden. This exciting job will often take you on overnight field trips for up to two weeks in duration, during which you will be exposed to the elements, camp in tents and undertake strenuous mountain traversing.
For appointment you will need a National Diploma in Horticulture, enhanced by 2 – 5 years’ relevant horticultural experience. As our ideal candidate, you must demonstrate sound interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and within a group. You will also need to be computer literate, able to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) in English and at least one other official language, and hold a valid, unendorsed Code B driver’s licence with at least one year’s practical driving experience. Your creativity would be an essential asset, as would the ability to develop the garden section through your vision and practical experience in landscape design.
As Chief Horticulturist, you will be involved in: • developing, maintaining and promoting representative plant collections of Proteaceae and Restionaceae families in creative, educational garden displays based on Botanical Garden principles • participating in Threatened Plants Programmes • managing and developing staff • building the display collections by undertaking field trips • ensuring genetic purity of the collections through proper plant recording and labelling • developing educational interpretation with the Interpretive Officer to enhance the display collections in the Garden • promoting the use of Proteaceae and Restionaceae through talks, articles and training of students • ensuring compliance with the Health & Safety Act.
SANBI offers an annual salary of R145 920, supplemented by additional fringe benefits that include attractive medical aid and pension schemes.

Internship with Biodiversity Monitoring & Reporting, Pretoria

We are offering an internship position to a promising student in the biological sciences to contribute towards the further development of the National Biodiversity Headline Indicators.
Applicants should be black South Africans and must be registered for a Masters degree. The intern will be assisting with collecting background literature, data and metadata for the National Biodiversity Headline Indicators, which are a set of statistics to be used by SANBI to report to the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism on the status of our biodiversity.
The internship is offered at the Biodiversity Centre, Pretoria .
Remuneration: R5000,00 per month. As this is a contract position, no benefits apply.

INTERNSHIP WITH DATA MANAGEMENT, PRETORIA

Medicinal, aromatic & food plants of southern Africa

SANBI is offering an internship position to contribute towards ongoing research projects. Applicants should be black South Africans, either completing their BSc Honours or MSc degree, and should be interested in gaining practical experience in research. No prior working experience is required but good grades at university will be a distinct advantage. The intern will be responsible for capturing scientific descriptions, preparing distribution maps using GIS, capturing and editing common and scientific plant names, scanning in images, and doing literature and internet searches of medicinal, aromatic and food plants of southern Africa. Interns will also be taught methods of extracting information out of scientific databases, and basic database structure and function.
Essential skills: computer literacy, strong sense of accuracy, eye for detail, willingness to learn, and an ability to concentrate for long periods of time. Botany as a third-year major subject is a requirement
The stipend offered is R4 000,00 per month. As this is a contract position, no benefits apply.

PRINCIPAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OFFICER

This is the ideal career challenge for a person who is passionate about development, planning and facilitation of the Biodiversity Education and Empowerment programmes and Outreach Greening Workshops to integrate Biodiversity Education and Empowerment into the school curriculum.
The ideal candidate should have a B Degree with Geography/Botany/Zoology as a major subject, a teaching qualification coupled with at least 5-10 years working experience with schools and in possession of a valid unendorsed code B driver’s licence with at least one year practical driving experience.
The appointee will be tasked with:
• Manage Biodiversity Education and Empowerment (BEE) programmes in the Eastern Cape. • Communicate with various government departments and municipalities in starting BEE programmes in the Eastern Cape. • developing and offering lessons, lead the enrichment programmes for volunteers, and facilitate teacher professional development workshops. • link indigenous and vegetable gardens developed through the GoN Programme with Environmental Education and formal school curriculum • Facilitate Horticultural and garden maintenance workshops. • Develop and implement awareness programmes for schools and communities. • General management of the BEE office in the Eastern Cape.
The candidate must have worked with municipalities, traditional leadership at strategic senior level, must have worked with other government departments, must have knowledge of indigenous plants, must have project management skills and experience, and must have knowledge and experience in managing environmental education programmes and knowledge about the National Curriculum statements. The Candidate must be computer literate and able to communicate effectively and efficiently in English and at least one other official language. The person must be willing to work overtime regularly as part of weekend duty and travel.

Appointment requires a National Diploma/ Degree or other relevant tertiary qualification in Secretarial or Office Management plus knowledge of Project Management Enhanced by 3-5 years relevant experience KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INVOLVE:
• Provide secretarial and administrative support to the Director, • provide basic financial management support. • arrange/organize workshops and meetings as well as arranging travel and accommodation. • represent Manager at certain meetings, workshops • manage queries (meetings and document queries) • manage budget and small project management as identified from time to time by the Director, • manage procurement
