Teacher Professional Development Workshops
Workshops are offered to primary as well as high school educators. At present, they are linked to two specific projects: the National Lotteries-funded ‘Biodiversity Education and Education for Sustainability" and SANBI's Outreach Greening Programme. Schools are selected to participate in these programmes on an annual basis and the educators involved with the programmes are invited to attend the relevant workshops.
Every year, the Lottery-funded "Biodiversity Education and Education for Sustainable Development" programme sponsors 50 schools to bring 180 learners each to the Garden for lessons based on the topics, biodiversity and sustainable development. The educators involved with this programme attend workshops which enhances their knowledge about the topics: environment, biodiversity and sustainable development. It also allows them to work with educators from other schools to investigate where these topics fit into the Revised National Curriculum Statement documents and then to construct lesson plans that they are required to implement in their school environment or in a local natural area or Nature Reserve.
One of the aims of the Outreach Greening Programme is to promote the educational value of the indigenous gardens created at schools. During the second and third years of the programme, educators attend a series of workshops where they are introduced to the ideas of interpretation in a garden including the designing and creation of plant labels and story boards. They work together to plan possible lessons in their school garden; they present these lessons to the other educators at the workshop for critical evaluation before they implement them back at their individual schools.
