Almost daily we are in touch with flowers. Flowers not only play a vital role in the lives of humans (think of seeds and fruit), but in the first instance are essential for the continual existence of plants. Flowers are the beautiful and complex reproductive structures of flowering plants, one of the most diverse and successful groups of living organisms. Among the most remarkable adaptations in biology are those associated with flowers. Understanding some of the "messages" send by flowers can enrich ones experience of nature. This talk will explain the structure of flowers in simple language, as well as how to "read" the messages communicated by them. This will be illustrated with examples from the southern African flora. Reference will also be made to the cultural significance of flowers, and the possible reasons why a culture of flowers never developed in sub-Saharan Africa.
