Kirstenbosch NBG: Garden Office

Kirstenbosch Garden OfficeThe Kirstenbosch Garden Office is located off Rhodes Drive, via the Service Entrance between Gates 1 and 3 and is open Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays, from 07h30-16h30.

The Garden Office contains the office of the Curator, Nursery Manager, Estate Manager, Administrative Manager, the Plant Recording Office, sundry administration staff and the staff meeting room. The offices of some of the horticulturists are in adjoining buildings.

The building that houses the Kirstenbosch Garden Office was built in 1924, by the University of Cape Town, to house the Bolus Herbarium. It was occupied by the Bolus Herbarium until the collection was moved to Groote Schuur in 1937-38. The building was then handed over to the National Botanic Gardens and was used to accommodate the Garden's growing herbarium. The building was renovated and new wings were added in 1957-58. The new wings were opened by Prof. Compton in October 1958, and the Herbarium named after him. The building still bears the name 'Compton Herbarium' on the gable.

During the Capital Development Project at Kirstenbosch, under the directorship of Prof. Brian Huntley, in the late 1990s, the Compton Herbarium was moved to the newly built Kirstenbosch Research Centre, while the building that housed it was renovated and the interior remodelled to accommodate the Garden Office.
