Winter flowering plants at Kirstenbosch

Winter is not a drab, colourless season at Kirstenbosch.

  • The fynbos is at its best during winter, many species are in flower including the king protea.
  • Look closely and you will find some of the rarer fynbos shrubs, like the rose spiderhead.
  • Buchus are fynbos shrubs with strongly aromatic foliage.
  • The crane flower (Strelitzia reginae) flowers throughout winter.
  • The striking orange, red and yellow spikes of the aloes stand out during winter.
  • Chasmanthe, also known as cobra lilies, are winter-growing bulbous plants.
