Barney

Mr. Barney Kgope
- Principal Scientist

Ecophysiologist dealing with responses of South African mesic savanna ecosystems (C 3 trees and C 4 grasses) to past, present and future atmospheric CO 2 and interactions with fire.

Brian

Mr. Brian Mantlana
- Principal Agricultural Scientist

Plant ecophysiologist of tropical savanna ecosystems, in particular those dominated by C 4 plant species. Studies the influence of environmental factors on leaf-level carbon and water fluxes.

Guy

Dr. Guy Midgley - Chief Specialist Scientist (head of unit)

Plant physiologist who became interested in climate change through trying to understand how rising carbon dioxide and UV-b radiation would affect plant success in an ecological context. Initiated the study of this phenomenon in South Africa in the early 1990's, expanding to broader scale studies in diverse ecosystems of the subcontinent.

Charles

Dr. Charles Musil - Senior Specialist Scientist

Ecologist looking at local and regional effects of global climate change, especially increases in solar ultraviolet-B radiation, atmospheric CO 2 , temperature and drought stress on the ecology, physiology, mineral nutrition, reproduction, N 2 fixation and genetics of South African Mediterranean-climate ecosystems and traditional African commercial plants.

Fatima

Ms. Fatima Parker-Allie - Senior Scientist

Currently researching the effects of alien invasive grasses under current and future climatic change scenarios on southern African biodiversity. This project involves modelling, microcosm experiments and a field component.

Wilfried

Dr. Wilfried Thuiller - Specialist Scientist

Has a PhD from the University of Montpellier, France (2003), where he mainly focused on the impacts of global change on biodiversity in Europe . In 2004, he joined the Global Change Research Group as a postdoctoral fellow and is involved in numerous elaborate projects to predict the dynamic response of species and plant functional types to changing landscapes.
