SANBI is seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to provide support to the Environmental Management component on a contract for a period ending 31st January 2020 and will be based in Nelspruit as a Assistant Director: Environmental Policy and Planning Coordinator.


The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for an efficient and enthusiastic person to provide support to the Environmental Management component of the Biodiversity and Land-Use Project.  The Biodiversity and Land-Use Project is a multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder project being implemented at the municipal scale.  The project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme and is implemented by the SANBI and its project partners.


This position requires the successful candidate to be in possession of a post graduate qualification in environmental management or environmental or natural sciences, enhanced by 3 years relevant experience in the sector with relevant project management experience and a good working knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem management.  It is essential for the incumbent to have sound computer skills and experience in MS Office, good interpersonal and conflict management skills; the ability to manage complex projects and to engage with a wide range of stakeholders in a broad range of circumstances. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to have an excellent spoken and written command of English, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Possession of a valid Code B driver’s license with one year’s practical driving experience is compulsory and the successful appointee will also be expected to use their own private vehicle for business trips as no official transport is available to undertake the duties required for this position.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Project manage the GEF Funded Biodiversity and Land Use Project interventions in Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs.
  • Establish and maintain the intergovernmental coordination mechanism and systems.
  • Provide policy support and guidance.
  • Develop implementation tools and guidelines on integrating biodiversity priorities in assessment and decision-making and comment on specified legislative reforms.
  • Provide capacity development on the integration of biodiversity priorities and the biodiversity mitigation hierarchy.


SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R572 046.24
