Assistant Director: Spatial Development Advisor - Re-advertisement (Contract position)

The Biodiversity and Land-Use Project is a multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder project being implemented at the municipal scale. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility through the UNDP and is implemented by SANBI and its project partners.

The SANBI is seeking to appoint an Assistant Director: Spatial Development Advisor who will provide spatial development planning and policy advice to the Planning and Land Use Management component of the Biodiversity and Land Use Project.


Appointment requires a relevant postgraduate qualification in town planning with a minimum of three years of relevant experience as well as project management experience. Knowledge of planning and environmental legislation, Spatial Development Frameworks, Land Use Schemes; experience in working in a local government context, knowledge of biodiversity spatial plans and experience with training and capacity development is also required.

The suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, as well as be willing to travel. The ability to maintain sound interpersonal relationships and highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. Proficiency in MS Office is also a specific requirement for this post.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:


  • Provide spatial development planning and policy advice to the development of environmental and land-use planning tools being developed by DEA and other government entities
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of legislation and policy to support the mainstreaming of biodiversity
  • Capacity development among national, provincial and municipal officials –regarding planning and land use management
  • Project Management Support of the Planning and Land Use Management Component of Biodiversity and Land Use Project



SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R 572 046.24.
