Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) internship programme (Contract position)

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is offering a one year internship to assist with the implementation of certain aspects of the National Plant Conservation Strategy.

The strategy was developed by SANBI and a range of conservation stakeholders to ensure the effective conservation of plants in South Africa. The strategy consists of 5 high level objectives and 16 specific targets ranging from developing an electronic flora to building botanical capacity in the country.

The key areas of work will include Target 5: Important areas for plant diversity identified and incorporated into conservation processes and Target 8: At least 60% of threatened plants in ex-situ collections, preferably in the country of origin and available for recovery programmes with 2% in active reintroduction programmes.

The successful candidate must have excellent project co-ordination experience and records. The successful candidate should be proficient in MS Office; GIS and Data basing skills will be an added advantage and have good command of spoken and written English and Afrikaans. The ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations with Project partners and collaborators is essential. Possession of a valid Code B driver’s license, with at least one year’s practical driving experience, completes the requirements.

Who is eligible to apply? We invite applications from MSc graduates to apply.  Preference will be given to historically disadvantaged individuals.

Value of internship: The stipend offered is fixed at R8 250 per month (Masters completed). No other benefits apply as this is an internship position.

Duration: April 2017 – March 2018.
