Description

This senior management position requires a Director who will provide leadership, guidance and coordination for systematics and collections in South Africa in order to contribute to the achievement of the mandate and goals of SANBI.

Requirements

PhD in Zoological Taxonomy / Systematics. A minimum of 10 years management experience in the biodiversity sector, of which 5 years must be on middle management, the ability to travel extensively and therefore a valid Code B driver’s license will be required.

Key responsibilities

 

  • Formulate and set goals for animal systematics, as part of strategic and business planning for the zoological component in Biosystematics.
  • Ensure credibility to provide leadership and guidance for animal taxonomy in South Africa through maintaining a personal research profile.
  • Stay informed about current projects and trends in biosystematics nationally and internationally to provide leadership and guidance to South African researchers, and relevant decision-makers.
  •  Participate in project management and implementation of projects relating to biosystematics in South Africa.
  • Guide and oversee the coordination of animal taxonomy data management in South Africa especially in relation to a national checklist of animals in South Africa and species pages for priority species.
  • Outreach in order to increase the profile of animal taxonomic work in South Africa (plan and participate in outreach activities such as relevant congresses, workshops, seminars, lectures).
  • Interpret, develop and implement Government and SANBI policies and strategies (e.g. National Biodiversity Framework, Performance Management, Health & Safety, Employment Equity, Transformation Action Plan & various other SANBI policies).
  • Assist in corporate policy development in SANBI, particularly with regard to systematics (ie. beyond animals).
  • Financial management of the zoological taxonomy component and externally funded national projects (budgeting & controlled spending).
  • Actively lead and manage staff (staff training & development, career planning, evaluation, promotion, job descriptions, performance plans, individual and overall planning, take disciplinary steps where needed).
  • Communication (with staff, colleagues & management; nationally and worldwide with other relevant initiatives and researchers).

 

Benefits

SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R898 743 per annum.
