Freshwater Biodiversity: 1x Postdoctoral Fellowship

19 March 2018 - 4:00pm

Applications are invited for one postdoctoral fellow to join the SANBI Freshwater Biodiversity Unit for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to support the implementation of the research programme in the unit. The fellowship will commence in approximately March/April 2018 and must be concluded by end March 2020.

Requirements: The candidates must be South African citizens and will be awarded in line with SANBI’s equity targets. Candidates must be independent and productive, and have a PhD (at least submitted if not awarded) that is related to freshwater biodiversity (e.g. freshwater biodiversity taxonomy/foundational science, the status of freshwater species or ecosystems, or freshwater ecosystem rehabilitation).

The postdoctoral fellowship is open to anyone who has completed their PhD in the last five years. An understanding of the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Working for Wetlands programme would be advantageous, as much of the work will be conducting scientific research to inform the prioritisation of wetland interventions and monitoring such interventions in terms of their desired ecological and socio-economic outcomes. Understanding of the Water Research Commission and South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity research priorities will also be advantageous.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability to synthesise literature and data sources, and find scientific evidence to formulate defendable recommendations. Experience should preferably include some peer reviewed publication outputs. Experience in spatial biodiversity planning and the ability to combine this with scientific research would be very advantageous.

Responsibilities may include the implementation of research projects that:

  • inform the assessment of status of freshwater species and ecosystems
  • inform the strategic planning and prioritisation of freshwater biodiversity areas and sites for interventions
  • informs Working for Wetlands interventions in terms of success, return on investment, outcomes/impacts (both ecological and socio-economic)
  • inform priorities aligned with the Water Research Commission research
  • inform future needs in biodiversity information management in the freshwater sector.

Bursary value: A fellowship of R300,000 per year for two years (24 months) is available (to be completed by end March 2020).  The funding will be transferred to the university at which the postdoctoral fellow registers and will be paid to the fellow from the university. Some running expenses will also be made available for the two years.

Application procedure: Each application is to be accompanied by a standard bursary application cover sheet (attached to this advert). Applications are to include a full CV; certified copies of ID and academic records; two letters of reference (one must be from an academic supervisor); examples of published work; and a short project outline. If available, also include a letter from an established researcher at the university of your choice, stating they would be willing to act as a host for the fellowship. Send all documents to with “SANBI freshwater postdoctoral fellowship” in the subject line.
