SANBI is seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual with proven skills in database administration and GIS experience on contract for a period of 2 years as a Geographic Informantion Systems Techinician.


The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual with proven skills in database administration and GIS experience, to provide support to the Directorate of Biological Invasions. The successful candidate will undertake data capture, data storage, data dissemination and generate innovative data solutions using ESRI GIS software. In addition the successful candidate will be responsible for accurate data capture, data management, backup and contract generation using Water Information Management System (WIMS) to ensure that SANBI meets DEA reporting requirements.


This appointment requires the candidate to be in possession of a tertiary qualification in Natural Science, GIS or a related degree, and enhanced by at least 2 years’ relevant working experience.  The candidate must demonstrate exceptional proficiency in MS Excel, MS Access and database applications (e.g. MSSQL, MySQL).  An interest in invasive species and knowledge of WIMS and computer programming will be an added advantage.

Furthermore the suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s licence, as well as be willing to travel. The ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations, attention to detail, as well as highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the development of a data management strategy;
  • Creating the pilot biological invasions data and information systems;
  • Manage and support systems used by Directorate of Biological Invasions;
  • Manage the invasive species data;
  • Undertake research to support the data management unit.


SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R385 542.66.
