Horticulturist (Permanent position)

Salary Level: Salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for horticulturists.

Directorate/Project: Conservation Gardens and Tourism 


The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of an organized, dedicated person to manage the development and maintenance of the plant collections in the Lowveld National Botanical Garden.


Prospective applicants must be in possession of a National Diploma Horticulture or Diploma Ornamental Horticulture or any qualification deemed to be equivalent by SAQA with at least 2 years relevant post-qualification working experience in general garden management, working with indigenous plants and/or botanical garden and plant conservation experience being advantageous. The candidate must be capable of managing a team, have sound knowledge of plant cultivation and have a love for nature and the outdoors. A commitment to safe work practices is essential. The candidate must be in possession of a valid (unendorsed) Code B driver’s license.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Garden planning and development
  • Curation of living collections
  • People management and human capital development
  • Horticultural research and development
  • Plant conservation and collaboration

Sound basic computer skills and experience with MS Office (MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint) is essential.  The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations and have an excellent spoken and written command of English, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  It is essential that the successful candidate be fit and capable of hiking over difficult terrain and under adverse weather conditions, as it is a requirement to go on field trips.
