Master’s bursary: Biosystematics Research (Taxonomic Research Project)

The South African National Biodiversity Institute is offering one Master’s bursary to students with strong interests in plant systematics.

The research project to be undertaken by the student, in fulfilment of the requirements of a Master’s degree, must contribute to the mandate of the Biosystematics Research and Biodiversity Collections Division (see This mandate is governed by the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act No. 10 of 2004, Section 11, and includes responsibilities to promote, and coordinate the taxonomy of South Africa’s biodiversity.

Candidates must be pro-active, enthusiastic, and interested in doing excellent taxonomic research in one of the SANBI priority taxa. Student bursaries are only available to South African citizens and will be awarded in line with national equity targets. Students need to apply to university programmes themselves and the bursary is conditional upon them securing their position in a postgraduate programme and have acceptance from a prospective academic supervisor, one of which should be from SANBI.

This bursary is only available for full time studies.

Value:  R120 000/year for two years.  Operational costs of the project will be covered by SANBI.
