SANBI is seeking to appoint a confident, self-motivated person on a permanent basis as an Outreach and Programme Officer.


The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANB) has an exciting career opportunity available to an appropriately qualified and confident, self-motivated person who will provide outreach and programmatic support to the Division.


This appointment requires a BSc qualification and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in science, ideally with some project coordination and communication/outreach experience. It is essential that the successful incumbent have an interest in biodiversity conservation, and willingness to learn quickly about various projects and programmes. Computer literacy with proficiency in MSOffice is essential (MS Access experience will be highly advantageous). Excellent English grammar and spelling, and some popular writing experience is required, while another South African language would be advantageous. Highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities are essential. An understanding of the growing field of science communication is recommended. Strong organisational skills, logical thinking, an eye for detail, and the ability to work to deadlines are essential.

Furthermore the suitable candidate must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license with one year’s driving experience.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Provide programmatic coordination support for the implementation of key programmes of work in the BRAM Division with its network of partners – this may include maintaining various  databases, taking notes at meetings and compiling meeting reports, assisting with SANBI reporting processes, etc;
  • Draft outreach materials (e.g. press releases, popular articles, infographics, posters, films, website pages, social media posts, newsletters) through consultation with BRAM staff, undertaking desktop research, and synthesis of existing materials. See these materials through to publication;
  • Support the planning and implementation of internal events (e.g. SciComm Forum, Research Day, Branch Symposium, etc.) and the participation of SANBI at relevant external events (e.g. National Science Week, careers exhibitions, SciFest Africa, etc.);
  • Undertake training and mentorship of staff, students and interns in outreach and science communication – e.g. be the conduit for cutting-edge science communication information and methods being used globally;
  • Participate in the development and implementation of mechanisms to monitor the impact of communication / outreach efforts and programme / project management practices so as to inform positive change.


SANBI offers an annual salary of R281 418.00 with fringe benefits.
