Post graduate funding opportunity MSc bursary: Environmental modelling of wetland condition

26 June 2017 - 4:00pm

Wetlands are a critical component of the hydrological cycle.  Improved conservation planning, rehabilitation prioritization and development assessments all rely on a best-available knowledge of the location, type and condition of wetland systems.  Considerable progress has already been made in regions of South Africa in mapping the probability of occurrence and probability of degradation of wetlands at a regional scale.  Such models require refinement and verification, extension and testing in new priority areas.

There is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Masters student to work as part of a broader team on a current Water Resource Commission-funded project “Enabling more responsive policy and decision-making in relation to wetlands through improving the quality of spatial wetland data in South Africa”.  This study, under the leadership of SANBI, will be informing the 2018 National Biodiversity Assessment process, currently underway through the CSIR and SANBI.

Applications are invited from students with a BSc (Hons) in the Environmental Sciences. Skills in geographic information systems, spatial modelling and basic statistics will be advantageous. The chosen candidate will be expected to undertake wetland field assessments so a driver’s licence is necessary.  Applications will be evaluated on merit and transformation criteria.

SANBI will assist the student with finding an appropriate supervisor and will also nominate a SANBI co-supervisor. The student will be expected to register with the relevant South African university for the second semester of 2017.

A student bursary of R120 000 p.a. (for living expenses and university fees) will be awarded to the successful applicant and will be renewable in the second year of study. Running costs will be available based on an agreed upon budget.

Duration: 2 years (July 2017 – June 2019)
