Project Coordinator: Biodiversity and Water Security Project (contract until 31 December 2022) (Contract position)

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to coordinate and contribute to the implementation of the Biodiversity and Water Security Project. This is a multi-faceted and multi-stakeholder project being implemented over five (5) years nationally and in selected catchments in two provinces. This project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and its project partners.


This position requires the candidate to be in possession of a relevant-graduate degree in Natural, Social or Management Sciences or a related field with at least 5 years’ relevant working experience in environmental project management. Extensive knowledge of project management of environmental projects Experience in working with a range of stakeholders including the three spheres of government, the private sector and civil society around environmental management.

Familiarity with financial principles and project costing. Knowledge of supply chain and financial management. Knowledge of environmental policy and legislation. Computer literacy with sound knowledge of and working experience in MS Office (Word, Excel and Power Point). Analytical and conceptual abilities. Facilitation and presentation skills. Good report writing, strategic thinking and  communication skills. Motivational and negotiating skills. A valid Code B driver’s licence.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:


  • Coordinate all donor compliance, reporting and governance processes and requirements for the Biodiversity and Water Security Project.
  • Contribute to project planning, and the drafting of project budgets, reports and other project documentation as required.
  • Coordinate project level monitoring and evaluation, supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity and Water Security Project’s knowledge management strategy.
  • Provide general support to the management of the project.



SANBI offers an all-inclusive remuneration package of R572 046.24 per annum.
