SANBI is seeking to appoint four highly motivated individuals to co-ordinate regional work on biological invasions on contract until 31 March 2020 as Regional Coordinator.

  • Western Cape (based at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town)
  • Northern Cape and Free state (based in the region – locality to be discussed)
  • Limpopo (based at the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden)
  • Gauteng and North West (based in the region – locality to be discussed)

Description

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for four highly motivated individuals to co-ordinate regional work on biological invasions. The posts each require a biodiversity scientist who is able to manage a regional unit and co-ordinate robust scientific assessments of the threats and impacts of local biological invasions on the environment. The candidates must be self-starters with excellent people management skills and the proven ability to manage a regional programme, aligned with the goals of the Directorate.

Requirements

The successful candidates must be in possession of a BSc in a relevant aspect of biodiversity science, with 5 years’ relevant working experience.  The incumbent must have good leadership skills, a good command of spoken and written English (competency in another official language is an advantage).  Must be in possession of a valid Code B driver’s license with at least one year’s driving experience.

Key responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for:

  • Co-ordinate and implement a regional programme on biological invasions;
  • Co-ordinate regional detection of emerging invasive alien species, eradication-planning and their management;
  • Ensure that research is undertaken on priority species and topics in the region, and that the work is published in peer reviewed scientific journals;
  • Co-ordinate data and information management for storage in a central Directorate’s repository;
  • Manage staff, students and administrative functions within the region.
