2012 Fynbos Conservation Awards
More than 80 representatives of the CAPE partnership organisations came together at Kirstenbosch on 13 June 2012 to celebrate the winners of the 2012 Fynbos Conservation Awards.
Purpose of the Fynbos Conservation Awards
The purpose of the Awards is twofold: firstly, to recognise individuals’ outstanding contribution or achievement amongst their peers in the broad biodiversity conservation community and secondly, to showcase successful or innovative work by the conservation sector to the public.
2012 Award Winners
A maximum of three Fynbos Conservation Awards are presented annually. The three award winners for 2012 were, Rupert Koopman; Jeffrey Manuel and Jannie Nieuwoudt.
Rupert Koopman
Rupert Koopman, a botanist at CapeNature, was awarded for his passion and dedication to conservation in the Cape Floristic Region. Through his voluntary work in drawing new communities into conservation, Rupert Koopman has made a significant contribution towards the CAPE Strategic Objectives of securing biodiversity through protected areas including biodiversity stewardship and strengthening institutional capacity, governance and communication for coordinated action.
Jeffrey Manuel
Jeffrey Manuel, Manager: Land-use and Environmental Management at SANBI, was awarded for his leadership in integrating biodiversity into development in the Cape Floristic Region. Through his innovative and creative ideas, Jeffrey Manuel has had a significant and lasting impact in contributing towards the CAPE Strategic Objectives of integrating biodiversity into land use planning and environmental management and strengthening institutional capacity, governance and communication for coordinated action.
Jannie Nieuwoudt
Jannie Nieuwoudt, farmer and chair of the Cederberg Conservancy was awarded for his exemplary leadership in conserving the Cederberg. Through his passion and dedication, Jannie Nieuwoudt has made a significant and lasting contribution towards the CAPE Strategic Objectives of enabling local level engagement and coordination through landscape initiatives and securing biodiversity through protected areas including stewardship.
The 2012 Fynbos Conservation Award judges were Mandy Cadman, Noel Oettle, Tom Mclaughlin and Lucille Meyer.
