Biodiversity Education celebrates Biodiversity Week 2012
The Biodiversity Education and Empowerment Directorate celebrated Biodiversity Week, including the International Day of Biodiversity on the 22nd May 2012, with the following special lessons, career expos and community events being facilitated:
Kirstenbosch NBG: A total of 446 learners and 22 educators participated in Biodiversity Week with the lessons being sponsored by the City of Cape Town’s YES Programme. A special lesson and an awareness-raising event were facilitated on Biodiversity Day together with officials from the City of Cape Town, the Executive Director of the Botanical Society, the Kirstenbosch Estate Manager, the horticultural students of the Garden and the teachers, principals and learners of two schools. Harold Porter NBG: A special lesson was facilitated at the Kleinmond Primary School to celebrate Biodiversity Day. Using their own school garden created through the SANBI Greening of the Nation Programme a number of years ago, the learners actively learnt about plant adaptations, the interdependence of living organism and the role of conservation. KwaZulu-Natal NBG: A career expo was facilitated with Life Science and Social Science grade 10 learners from five high schools as part of the Biodiversity Week celebrations. Partners in the biodiversity sector were invited to deliver speeches on biodiversity careers at the main event of the day as well as host stands where they could engage with the learners on an individual basis. Eastern Cape: Biodiversity Week was celebrated with an extensive event hosted at the Hole in the Wall at Coffee Bay; a significant site chosen to link to the theme of the week which was Marine Biodiversity. The partnership event with the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) and the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Local Municipality (KSD) proved to be highly successful with a number of high profile speakers, more that 80 officials from different organisations and government departments and over 1000 educators, learners and community members participating. Lowveld NBG: The Biodiversity Day ‘lesson’ was facilitated in partnership with the WESSA Sustainable USAID Project, SANBI EDRR and the Curriculum Implementers of the Department of Basic Education. Links were created between biodiversity and healthy soil, invasive alien plants as well as sustainable technologies. Read the full story…
Pretoria NBG: A variety of special fun-filled lessons on biodiversity were facilitated during Biodiversity Week to both primary and high school learners. In addition, an event was hosted for three community co-operatives at the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
