The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Lowveld National Botanical Garden celebrated the 2017 Mandela Day by spending time with, and planting a garden for the community of Sifunindlela Village in Kabokweni, close to White River in Mbombela Municipality.

This day was marked with the establishment of a garden at Hlayisani Centre of Hope, a community based development centre. The centre caters for the needs of the young and old in Sifunindlela, and is home to a number of gender based violence victims housed at the centre for safety.

Lowveld mandela day 2017The non-profit organisation was established in 2015 after realising the need for intervention because of the shortage in youth skills and to provide assistance to victims of gender based violence.

Lowveld NBG hopes that the garden donation it has made will go a long way in giving hope and a better environment to the community. The garden will serve as a constant reminder of how beautiful the world is, and will give a sense of hope in the healing properties nature and the environment present.
