26 January 2012

Guy Midgley

The South African National Biodiversity Institute is pleased to announce that Dr Guy Midgley, Chief Director heading up its Climate Change and Bioadaptation Division, has been awarded a Professorship at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He will engage in research and student post graduate training activities on a 25% fractional basis annually, advancing research on issues of relevance to the SANBI mandate, in the School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Kwazulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus. We believe this which will enhance his current position at SANBI.

Publication in the "Science" journal

The newly appointed Professor Midgley has also kicked off this exciting new role with the notable achievement of a publication in the world-leading scientific journal "Science" on February 13, 2012, entitled "Biodiversity and ecosystem function". This is a strong vindication of his National Research Foundation "B1" rating achieved last year, the 3rd highest scientific rating achievable in the NRF system, and his membership of the Academy of Science of South Africa. These achievements are an indication of the credibility held nationally and internationally by SANBI scientists, and bodes well for a productive time for Prof Midgley in this additional role.
