Walter Sisulu ranked 2nd best botanical garden in world list on Huffington Post

12 October 2012

Waterfall at Walter Sisulu NBGThis is no mean feat considering that this was a verdict of ‘experts’ consisting of horticulturists and administrators of similar venues around the world in a list issued last Thursday (13 Sept) on the Huffinton Post.

This “Must See List of gardens before You die” features 8 gardens in the US, some in Europe and the UK and others in Asia, Canada and in Africa.

See who made the list:

According to the President of the US based floral group with an international membership, Mother Nature Network and a gardens publication editor, Tom Oder none of those gardens that made the list nominated themselves.

Although this was not an official award but it is feat that was accomplished in a project called: 13 Stunning Arboretums Around the World and was published amongst various publications including the US based Huffington Post Green .

Oder concedes their list may have been subjective but then these “were a collection of public gardens assessed in terms of “presentation, diversity, rarity, historical significance or conservations of endangered species as criteria”.

Picnicking at Walter Sisulu NBGThe Garden has been voted the Best Picnic Spot in Gauteng on no less than 7 occasions by the public. It is also listed as the 2nd Best Nature Attraction to visit in Gauteng by SA Tourism Authority and has other numerous awards to its name by various institutions and chambers of commerce.

In other circles though, Kisternbosch National Botanical Garden is generally rated amongst the top Botanical Gardens in the world, due to its size, landscape, its plant collection as well as its popularity with tourists as one of the Big Six venues to visit in Cape Town.
