KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium: Research Projects
Flora of Kwazulu-Natal Project
The two aims of this project are:
- to produce a briefly annotated list of the plants growing (naturally and invasive) in Kwazulu-Natal, and
- to produce an interactive, on-line key to these plants.
What we do
- A hardcopy annotated checklist with descriptions of families and genera, keys to genera and species, and brief notes on each taxon at species level and below, is in an advanced stage of preparation.
- An electronic key to 1084 species of trees will be posted on www.lucidcentral.com by March 2013. This will include a factsheet containing a description (designed to be as closely comparable to all the others as possible) and illustrations, almost always of live material, for each entity in the key.
Where we work
The project is housed at the Kwazulu-Natal Herbarium, Durban.
Reason for this project
This activity is exactly in line with the long-term aim of SANBI and its predecessors to empower our clients by making botanical information available in a usable form.
What we have achieved
The responsible officer’s publication list includes some 380 items on a wide variety of topics.
How to contact us
Use the general Kwazulu-Natal Herbarium contact details. Note that an appointment is ESSENTIAL for face-to-face meetings.
