Plant Identification & Visiting the KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium (NH)

KwaZulu- Natal Herbarium is located adjacent to the Durban Botanical Gardens, on the corner of Botanic Gardens and St Thomas Roads, Durban

  • The herbarium hours are:
    Monday - Friday, 07:45 -16:30.
  • Parking is available on the property of the KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium.

 

Visitor responsibilities

  • When arriving at the herbarium please check in with the receptionist
  • Please sign the visitors book
  • In order to prevent accidental introduction of pests all specimens brought into the herbarium must go through the appropriate pest control treatment
  • No food or drink allowed within the herbarium
  • Do not remove anything (i.e. specimens, books, equipment) from the herbarium without permission of the herbarium collections staff.

Make an appointment to use the collections
For use of the collection we strongly suggest that you make an appointment ahead of time to ensure the appropriate staff member will be available to attend to you. Please call 031-202 4095 for an appointment.


PLANT IDENTIFICATION SERVICE

Plant material (live or dried) from the following groups will be accepted for identification: Southern African ferns, cycads, conifers and flowering plants; cultivated exotics in these groups and weeds. Unfortunately, we cannot handle other groups such as algae, mosses, lichens or fungi. Identifying graphic material (photos or drawings) poses additional problems, but good quality graphic material will be accepted at the same rates as those set out below.

Handling fees

  1. Commercial rate, applicable to EIAs and other profit-making users: R25 per specimen.
  2. Student rate, applicable to students, researchers and private individuals: R10 per specimen.

These rates are subject to change.

Conditions

  • Only fertile (flowering or fruiting) specimens are accepted for identification.
  • We undertake to identify all accepted specimens as far as possible.
  • Identifications are subject to the availability of specialists in particular taxonomic groups.
