The International Mediterranean Ecosystems Conference, or MEDECOS, is organised by the International Society of Mediterranean Ecology (ISOMED) which promotes research and education to advance the understanding and in turn, the conservation, of the world’s five regions with Mediterranean-like climates. All five regions are recognised as globally significant hotspots for biodiversity. MEDECOS is held on a semi-regular basis and rotates amongst countries with a Mediterranean and Mediterranean-like climate.
Each MEDECOS conference is centred on understanding the ecology and evolution of Mediterranean ecosystems and their respective species. Researchers, resource managers and practitioners from all around the world share research gaps, ideas and solutions in an effort to advance the knowledge of these fragile and diverse landscapes. Attendees and participants gain valuable insight into the similarities and differences in how these ecosystems function and evolve.
The next MEDECOS will be held from 7 to 11 September 2020 at Club Mykonos Resort in Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa. The conference’s theme is ‘Partnerships for Global Change’ and will be organised and held in conjunction with the Fynbos Forum, a local affiliation of landowners, planners, managers, researchers and other stakeholders that meet annually to discuss the management issues and current research of Fynbos – a Mediterranean-like ecosystem. Each Fynbos Forum meeting is aimed at formulating priorities for future research and conservation management actions to ensure the preservation of Fynbos.
The theme for the 2020 meeting is Partnerships for Global Change. While the deadline for the call for symposiums and workshops has closed, the abstract submission deadline is 24 February 2020. Super early registration is currently open until 1 May 2020 and the deadline for late registration and payments are 1 August 2020. Registration for a local field trip available for conference attendees opened on 1 November 2019.
