The Cape Bonsai Kai is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and is one of the oldest Bonsai Clubs in South Africa having started in 1970. The art of bonsai was formally introduced to South Africa by Betty Lucas in about 1945. Some of her bonsai are still housed in the Bonsai Arboretum in Stellenbosch.
Cape Bonsai has produced some of the finest bonsai artist in the country that has been practising the art for many years and has produced bonsai that have won awards at many regional competitions.
Cape Bonsai Kai Bonsai Show will again be at Kirstenbosch from the 13th to the 16th December. This is the opportunity for members to display their finest bonsai, sharing their enjoyment and excitement with the public. During the show there will be Bonsai demonstrations illustrating the practicalities of developing bonsai like repotting, root and branch pruning and designing trees from nursery stock. There will also be opportunities to discuss your bonsai and you can even bring it along for advice.
There will also be bonsai trees, a variety of pots and tools specially designed to work on bonsai for sale.
It is a great opportunity to also visit the world famous Kirstenbosch Gardens especially the impressive “Boomslang” walk and maybe have a picnic or enjoy the restaurant facilities.
