Kirstenbosch is holding its Winter Wonders campaign these winter school holidays. From 15 June to 8 July, children up until the age of 17 have free entry into Kirstenbosch.
The Winter Wonders Special is a great opportunity for families to explore the most beautiful garden in Africa and learn more about its magnificent and meticulously-cultivated indigenous flora. At the info desk, ask about the free 90 minute guided tours, or simply grab a map and go your own way.
To begin your adventure, start with The Conservatory – a desert house with a majestic baobab tree in its centre, succulent treasures and ‘weird’ welwitschias – also known as ‘tweeblaarkanniedood’. Then take a walk on the wild side towards the Tree Canopy Walkway (aka ‘The Boomslang‘) and tell the kids to be on the lookout for birds and dinosaurs (well, life-sized sculptures of them anyway!) lurking behind giant cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre.
Walking further up, you’ll spot different species of flowering proteas. Near Gate 2, you can see some of the healing plants in the Useful Plants Garden, explore with your nose in the Fragrance Garden and appreciate the beauty of African art in the Sculpture Garden.
It’s best to make a day of it, so pack a picnic or head over to Moyo and feast from the hearty winter menu, which offers favourites such as flambéed kudu fillet, vegan shakshouka and moyo mousse with a twist. A special kids menu is also available, all to be enjoyed next to one of the cosy fireplaces.
Attached is Moyo Restaurant Kirstenbosch’s activities programme for the school holidays.
