The Protea Garden displays plants from the remarkably diverse Protea Family (Proteaceae): Protea species, (proteas or sugarbushes), Leucospermum species (pincushions), Leucadendron species (leucadendrons or conebushes), Mimetes species (mimetes or pagodas) and Serruria species (serrurias or spiderheads).

This area is at its best in the winter and spring months (May to October) when the proteas, leucadendrons and serrurias are in bloom. The pincushions provide a colourful display in late winter, spring and early summer (August to November). The largest of all the proteas, and South Africa’s national flower, Protea cynaroides (king protea), flowers mainly during winter and spring (June-Oct).
