Capacity building resources

In 2016, SANBI and the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) published a guide called Mapping Biodiversity Priorities to encourage the updating of NBSAPs using spatial and cartographic data, highlighting the necessity and the usefulness of spatial data to inform land-use planning. This guide has been updated through the SBAPP Regional Project to include species assessments and linkages to the Global Biodiversity Framework targets. The Mapping Biodiversity Priorities guide version 2024 and its sister publication Mainstreaming Biodiversity Priorities are both available for download here.

To further support understanding and application of the approach, an introductory eLearning course based on Mapping Biodiversity Priorities is available on the IUCN Academy platform. The course is free, self-paced (approximately 3–4 hours), and was launched with support from the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems programme and funding from the Alcoa Foundation. The course is available here.
