Common names: Puff adder (Eng.); pofadder (Afr.); isimamfene (isiZulu); phiri (seSotho); mhiri (Xitsonga); irhamba (isiXhosa).
The puff adder is one of Africa’s most widespread and commonly encountered venomous snakes. It is a heavy-bodied viper that relies on camouflage and ambush hunting. When threatened, it inflates its body and produces a loud hissing sound before striking with incredible speed.
Description/How to recognise a puff adder
The puff adder is a thick-bodied, robust viper, usually 0.9–1.2 m long, though large specimens may reach 1.4 m. Its colouration varies widely depending on habitat but typically consists of bold chevron or V-shaped patterns in shades of yellow, brown, olive or grey, providing excellent camouflage.
It has a broad triangular head, vertical slit pupils and strongly keeled scales. Unlike cobras, puff adders do not spread a hood but coil their bodies and hiss loudly when threatened. They possess long, hinged fangs and deliver a cytotoxic venom through a strike rather than spitting.
Getting around
Puff adders are mainly terrestrial and usually move slowly, relying on their camouflage to remain unnoticed. However, despite their sluggish appearance, they can strike extremely fast. They use rectilinear (caterpillar-like) movement and usually lie in ambush beside paths, rodent trails or game tracks. They are mostly active at night (nocturnal) but may bask or hunt during the day in cooler weather.
Communication
Their primary defensive display includes:
- Coiling the body.
- Loud, rhythmic hissing.
- Pulling the head back into a striking position.
- Rapid forward strike if pressure continues.
Puff adders do not warn with rattles or hood displays like other snakes; they prefer to remain still to avoid detection but will defend themselves aggressively if threatened. Their venom is cytotoxic and can cause severe swelling and tissue damage, which, without treatment, may be life-threatening.
Distribution
The puff adder is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, from sea level to mountainous regions. It is one of the most widespread snakes in southern Africa, occurring in: South Africa (all provinces), Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini and parts of East and Central Africa. Due to its adaptability and camouflage, it accounts for a large percentage of serious snake bites in the region.
Habitat
Puff adders occupy a wide variety of habitats, including savanna, Karoo scrub, grassland, semi-desert, well-vegetated coastal areas, farmlands (where they like to hide in barns), road edges and footpaths. Although mainly ground-dwelling, they may occasionally be found in low bushes or structural gaps, but this is less common.
Food
They are ambush predators that feed on rodents (their primary prey), small mammals, birds, frogs, lizards and sometimes even other snakes. They often remain motionless for long periods waiting for prey to pass within striking distance.
SEX and LIFE CYCLES
Sex
Puff adders are viviparous (give birth to live young rather than laying eggs). Mating commonly occurs in the spring months (Southern Hemisphere spring) when males locate females and may engage in ritualised combat or wrestling to gain access to a receptive female. After mating the female carries embryos through a several-month-long gestation and gives birth to a large litter of fully formed young. Typical litter sizes are highly variable but commonly range from 20 to 80 neonates, and exceptionally larger litters have been recorded.
Longevity and life cycle
Puff adders grow relatively quickly to adulthood; hatchlings are typically 12–20 cm at birth and are independent immediately. In the wild individual lifespans are variable and influenced by predation and human impacts; many living for several years in the wild, while individuals may reach a decade or more in favourable conditions or in captivity. Reproductive maturity is reached after a few years depending on local conditions.
Family life
Puff adders are solitary snakes. Adults do not form social groups or extended family units; interactions between individuals are usually limited to courtship and mating. During the breeding season males may encounter each other while searching for females and can engage in non-lethal combat or wrestling displays to decide access to a female. There is no hierarchical pecking order or communal structure, each snake defends its own space and foraging sites, and female parental care is absent: neonates are independent from birth.

Friends and foes
Puff adders are ambush predators that feed on a broad range of small vertebrates; primarily rodents and small mammals, but also birds, frogs, lizards and occasionally other snakes. Their sit-and-wait strategy places them as important meso-predators controlling small vertebrate populations. Natural enemies (species that predate on puff adders) include mongoose species, honey badgers, civets, some birds of prey (e.g., Secretary birds and Snake Eagles) and, opportunistically, other snakes. Puff adders may compete indirectly with other medium-sized predators (e.g., small carnivores and large raptors) for the same prey base. Human persecution and road mortality are major anthropogenic threats.
Smart strategies
Camouflaged ambush: Bold but cryptic patterning (chevrons and blotches) allows them to remain effectively invisible in leaf litter, grass and sandy soils – perfect for ambush hunting.
Energy conservation: Their sit-and-wait lifestyle conserves energy and reduces exposure to predators while still giving high strike success.
Rapid strike and long fangs: Although generally slow moving, puff adders can strike extremely quickly and inject large quantities of cytotoxic venom to subdue prey.
Viviparity: Giving birth to live young is an advantage in cooler or more variable climates because embryos are retained and thermoregulated inside the mother, improving offspring survival in environments where egg development may be risky.
Poorer world without me
Puff adders provide natural rodent control, reducing crop damage and limiting disease vectors associated with rodent populations. Removing this predator would likely allow rodent numbers to increase, with knock-on effects for agriculture and human health. They are an integral part of the small-mammal food web in many savanna, grassland and scrub ecosystems.
People and I
Cultural beliefs & myths: Across southern Africa puff adders inspire fear due to their cryptic nature and potent bite. Various communities have folk beliefs about snakes (some see them as bad omens, others as powerful totems) and parts of snakes are used in traditional medicines in some cultures.
Economic/research uses: Puff adder venom is studied for toxicology and antivenom production; snakebite medicine and research rely on understanding their venom.
How people should react to encounters:
- Do not attempt to handle, kill or move the snake.
- Give it space and allow it to move away; if in a built area, call a wildlife rescue or trained snake handler.
- Wear stout footwear and use caution walking at night or in long grass; light pathways at night to reduce accidental encounters.
- If bitten, seek urgent medical care immediately – do not attempt folk remedies, tourniquets, or cutting the wound. Transport to a medical facility for antivenom and supportive care as required.
Conservation status and what the future holds
Status: Regionally and globally the puff adder is considered Least Concern – it is widespread and common across much of sub-Saharan Africa. SANBI assesses the species as widespread and abundant in South Africa.
Threats: Local threats include persecution (killing by people), habitat loss and fragmentation, roadkill, and occasional collection for the pet or traditional medicine trades. Climate change and land-use change may alter local distributions in the future.
Protection and what you can do: There is no urgent global conservation concern for this species, but local protections and wildlife legislation vary by country; in many areas snakes are protected by general wildlife laws, which prohibit unnecessary killing. Actions people can take include habitat conservation, community education to reduce unnecessary killing, safe disposal/relocation by trained snake handlers, and support for rapid medical treatment for bite victims. Reporting injured or displaced snakes to local conservation/rehabilitation services also helps.
RELATIVES
Number of species and local congeners: The genus Bitis currently contains around 17–18 recognised species distributed across Africa and into parts of the southern Arabian Peninsula. Several Bitis species occur in southern Africa alongside B. arietans [for example B. atropos (berg adder), B. caudalis (horned adder), B. cornuta (many-horned adder); B. rubida (red adder), B. albanica (Albany adder) and others]. B. arietans is the type and most widespread species of the genus.
Evolutionary notes: Vipers or adders (family Viperidae) are an ancient group of snakes with a global fossil record extending tens of millions of years. The Bitis lineage has diversified into both very small dwarf adders and very large species (e.g., Gaboon viper, Bitis gabonica), showing striking morphological and ecological variety across Africa. Their venom systems have also evolved diverse toxin mixtures adapted to prey and defence, making them important subjects for evolutionary and toxicological study.

Derivation of scientific name: The genus name Bitis comes from Latin meaning ‘to bite’, referring to its powerful bite. The species name arietans is Latin for ‘striking like a battering ram’, describing the snake’s powerful and fast forward strike when threatened.
