In honour of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2023, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) will open all of its National Botanical Gardens and the National Zoological Gardens to the public for free. This year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity is “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity,” set out by the Convention on Biological Diversity, and SANBI is proud to support this important initiative.

“Biodiversity: Nature’s free gift for health and wellness” is the tagline for this event. By offering free access to our gardens and the zoo, SANBI encourages people to connect with nature and experience its many benefits. Spending time in nature is not only enjoyable, but also beneficial for physical and mental well-being.

Visitors can expect a range of activities that showcase the unique biodiversity of each garden, including guided walks, talks, and interactive displays.

International Day of Biological Diversity  provides an opportunity to educate people about the importance of biodiversity and how they can contribute to its protection. SANBI invites everyone to join visit a national botanical or zoological garden on 22 May 2023 to celebrate the diversity of life in our beautiful country.
