The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) announces that its National Botanical and Zoological Gardens will remain open unless further directives are received from the government of the Republic of South Africa.

SANBI has interrogated the speech made by the President of the Republic of South Africa on 15 March 2020 and has adapted its working protocols to ensure the safety of its staff, visitors and the animals in its care.

SANBI is in the process of ensuring its National Botanical and Zoological Gardens are compliant  with international guidelines regarding improved hygiene in order to slow down the spread of the coronavirus.

Members of the public are urged to follow the guidelines issued by the South African National Department of Health and other agencies, and practice social distancing, hand washing and sneezing and coughing precautions. Visitors to all the gardens are urged to make use the wide open spaces and fresh air.
