Celebrating World Ocean Day

Tomorrow, Thursday, 8 June 2023, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) will join the global community in commemorating World Ocean Day. This year’s theme, ‘Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing’, urges us to explore the hidden facets of Earth and ignite a renewed passion for the preservation and protection of our precious oceans and the entirety of our blue planet.

At SANBI, we’re committed to unlocking the secrets of our planet’s watery realms. Our dedicated team of experts is tirelessly working to uncover the hidden aspects of South Africa’s marine space – a treasure trove of iconic seascapes. We believe that the oceans are not just a source of beauty and inspiration, but also vital for our survival, our wellbeing and our very identity. They are home to incredible biodiversity, regulate our climate and provide sustenance to millions of people around the world.

As we commemorate this year’s World Ocean Day, we urge everyone to join the global movement and take action in preserving our oceans. Every small step counts.

Here are a few ways you can contribute:

  • Reduce plastic use.
  • Support sustainable fishing practices.
  • Participate in beach clean-ups.
  • Combat climate change by reducing electricity and fuel use.
  • Support sustainable coastal tourism.
  • Appreciate ocean cultures and the benefits from our oceans.
