Kwelera National Botanical Garden supports NJR Botanical Garden in Mount Fletcher

Our colleagues at Kwelera National Botanical Garden have exemplified the SANBI value of ubuntu, which is about harnessing, caring, sharing and being in harmony with all of creation, by supporting an inspiring initiative in Mount Fletcher.
Thembisile Ralarala, a passionate former educator with a deep love for nature, dreamed of creating a botanical garden in her hometown of Mount Fletcher to showcase indigenous plants and raise awareness about plant conservation. She wanted to teach people, especially children in local schools, about the importance of these plants and help them see the beauty of South Africa’s native flora, not just exotic plants like roses.
When the Kwelera team first heard about her garden, they saw an opportunity to make a difference. They didn’t know exactly what it would take, but they knew SANBI’s expertise, resources and networks could help Thembisile’s project thrive.
Running a botanical garden comes with challenges, from sourcing indigenous plants to managing invasive species and maintaining the space. To support Thembisile’s efforts, the Kwelera team provided gardening tools such as spades, pruning shears and bush cutters to help care for plants and remove unwanted species as well as firefighting equipment to help safeguard the garden from the threat of wildfires. To expand the diversity of plants, the team contributed indigenous species and offered expert guidance on plant care, propagation and display techniques.
Reflecting on the experience, Nomama Mei, Garden Manager at Kwelera National Botanical Garden, shared: ‘The most rewarding part of this journey has been seeing how a simple act of support can have a ripple effect. Thembisile’s garden is not just about plants, it’s about education, empowerment and conservation. Knowing that our team played a small role in contributing to this garden has been incredibly fulfilling. This project has reminded us that when we share our knowledge and resources, we help grow more than just gardens, we help grow communities.’
