The National Biodiversity Assessment is South Africa’s periodic assessment of the state of biodiversity and ecosystems. NBA 2025 has expanded its scope to include several new groups of species, helping to improve our understanding of the country’s rich and unique biodiversity.
Freshwater crabs play important roles in river and wetland ecosystems and are often indicators of freshwater health. Fairy shrimps are remarkable crustaceans that inhabit temporary wetlands and seasonal pools, ecosystems that are among the most threatened and least understood in the country. Spiders, one of the most diverse groups of animals in South Africa, contribute significantly to ecosystem functioning through their role as predators and are valuable indicators of environmental change.
Despite their ecological importance, these groups have historically received less attention than more familiar plants and animals. Their inclusion in NBA 2025 represents an important step towards a more comprehensive understanding of South Africa’s biodiversity.
