SANBI and France’s National Museum of Natural History strengthen scientific cooperation

On the margins of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan, Armenia, the CEO of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) met with the President of France’s National Museum of Natural History (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle – MNHN).

The meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen institutional relations, exchange experiences and identify areas of mutual interest for future scientific and technical collaboration.

During the engagement, SANBI’s CEO shared the Institute’s experience in managing natural history collections and their critical role in advancing biodiversity research, species identification, monitoring and evidence-based decision-making.

The discussions also explored opportunities to leverage MNHN’s scientific expertise and institutional experience to strengthen the work of SANBI’s Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre (TSCC), which supports nine countries in Southern Africa in implementing the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Importantly, both institutions agreed to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a foundation for deepening collaboration, identifying shared priorities and developing a joint programme of work, including opportunities for capacity development, knowledge exchange and regional technical and scientific cooperation.

This engagement represents an important step towards building stronger partnerships between scientific institutions and translating biodiversity knowledge into practical support for countries.

Connecting institutions, sharing knowledge and strengthening science for biodiversity action.
