One of the key outcomes of the Biodiversity and Land Use (BLU) project is to ensure that pressure on biodiversity is reduced through better land and natural resource management practices implemented by private and communal land owners in and outside of stewardship areas in Amathole, Cape Winelands, Ehlanzeni and uMgungundlovu District Municipalities.
Implementing partners aim to achieve the above outcome through the development and adoption of Management Plans, Biodiversity Agreements and landowner stewardship agreements for the respective areas with the respective landowners. Support to landowners does not end with the development of the management plan but also includes capacity building and supporting the landowner to implement the management plan.
The Hexriver Complex managed by implementing partner CapeNature is located in the Cape Winelands District Municipality. The Complex comprises five Protected Areas, namely Bokkeriviere State Forest in the east, the Ben-Etive and Fonteintjiesberg Nature Reserves in the centre and the Wittebrug Nature Reserve and Witzenberg Nature Reserve in the west of the Hexriver Mountain range.
CapeNature has produced a user friendly summary of the Hexriver Complex Protected Area Management Plan. This accessible document will be shared with landowners, partner organisations, municipalities and other stakeholders in support of improved understanding and support for the management goals and strategies of the Protected Area Management Plan.
