South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) invites experts to apply to serve on a panel to review risk analyses conducting on alien species. The panel will also assist with and provide advice on the risk analyses carried out under the auspices of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEM:BA), and specifically the Alien and Invasive Species Regulations.

The Alien Species Risk Analysis Review Panel (ASRARP) will play an advisory role and make recommendations to the Department of Environmental Affairs but will have no executive or decision-making powers. Experts with knowledge in the following fields are being sought:

  • The social and economic aspects of environmental regulations
  • Understanding of environmental policy and its implementation
  • Environmental risk analysis
  • The science and management of biological invasions.

ASRARP is due to meet four times a year, and panel members are remunerated for their time spent in preparing for and attending these meetings with an amount of R600 per hour; there is a separate flat rate of R2000 for acting as the lead ASRARP reviewer of applications. The terms of reference for the ASRARP are attached.  Terms of office will run until end of March 2020.
