Overview
The SANBI Research Ethics Committee (REC) is a standing committee established in accordance with the requirements of Section 73 of the National Health Act (Act no. 61 of 2003) and the South African National Standard: Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (SANS 10386: latest edition), and is responsible for granting ethics clearance for research involving animals, plants and human participants (social). The Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, The Protection of Personal Information Act (Act no. 4 of 2013), the SANBI Ethics Management Policy (August 2020) and the SANBI Code of Ethics for Research are also relevant.
Application for Ethics Approval
The SANBI REC will consider ethical clearance of research projects funded by SANBI and not submitted to any other organization/institute, undertaken by SANBI staff, students and or PI’s intending to use SANBI’s research facilities and collections. The committee will assess proposed research projects for any potential ethical considerations.
