Two post-doctoral fellowships are available to conduct research on biological invasions through the South African National Biodiversity Institute’s Biological Invasions Directorate
One of the post-doctoral positions must be on a topic of direct relevance to the National Status Report on Biological Invasions (for the 2017 report that was released in 2018).
The other position must be:
- on a topic relevant to one of SANBI’s focus areas (status report and monitoring; incursion detection and response planning; eradication planning and co-ordination; taxonomy). - based either at a historically disadvantaged tertiary institution or campus or at one of the new public universities.

Biological Invasions Post-Doc Project for work on the National Status Report 2019
Bursary value: R 300,000 p.a. for 2 years to cover living expenses
Running costs: Project running expenses are covered separately to the bursaries and vary depending on the project.
Requirements: Candidates must be pro-active, enthusiastic, and interested in doing excellent research that will help improve our understanding and management of biological invasions, and willing to assist with human capacity development. Post-doctoral research bursaries are open to anyone who has completed their PhD in the last five years. The successful post-doctoral fellows must register at a South African university.
Application procedure: Each application is to be accompanied by a standard bursary application cover sheet (see attached). Applications must include a full CV; certified copies of ID and academic record; two letters of academic reference; an agreement from a prospective academic supervisor; a two-page project outline; and two journal publications if applicable.
