The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires a motivated individual with proven ability to analyse requirements, design and implement solutions and the documentation of process solutions to support the Biodiversity Information and Planning Directorate.

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or Information Science and Technology or Geo-Informatics or any relevant tertiary qualification. The successful candidate should have a minimum 5 years’ experience in a software development role that utilised some or all of the following technology applications:

  • Microsoft .Net framework and toolsets, C#, MVC;
  • HTML5, REST APIs, JavaScript such as (JQuery), DOJO;
  • SQL Server or PostgreSQL development skills.

The following would be advantageous:

  • Related RDBMS like MySQL, PostGIS development skills;
  • GIS skills using ArcGIS Desktop or QGIS;
  • GIS programming with Python – ArcPy or Python spatial modules;
  • Statistical/Data analytics using R, SPSS, SQL Server, Python or other.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations, have an excellent spoken and written command of English, and be analytical with an eye for detail as well as be in possession of a valid Code B (unendorsed) with one year’s practical driving experience, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team as well as be proficient in MS Excel, MS Access and knowledge of database application.

The responsibilities include:

  • Perform business analysis and convert business requirements into workable technical solutions;
  • Develop, test, improve, modify and maintain software solutions in line with (evolving) business requirements;
  • Support the improvement of integrity and quality of data holdings through database development and testing;
  • Create documentation on all required and developed solutions and processes;
  • Oversee quality and work efficiency of users and staff by supporting implementation of business solutions through training, troubleshooting user issues and change management processes.

SANBI offers an annual salary of R444 693.00 with additional fringe benefits.
