Assistant Director: Gender Mainstreaming and Safeguards

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to develop and coordinate a programme of work on gender mainstreaming and environmental and social safeguards in the context of climate change adaptation for donors such as the Green Climate Fund and the Government of Flanders, and for internal SANBI processes.

The successful candidate will support the development of training materials and project tracking tools for gender mainstreaming; convene and participate in training events to build capacity on gender mainstreaming and environmental and social safeguards; convene and participate in project learning events to reflect on and capture project development and implementation outcomes; and capture these outcomes and learning on gender mainstreaming and environmental and social safeguards in project reports, case studies and publications.

The position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Honours or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. The successful candidate must have 6 years’ experience in a relevant field.

The successful candidate must have:

• Well-developed project management and grant management skills.
• Excellent organisational and coordination skills.
• Good interpersonal and teamwork skills and experience in supply chain and financial management processes.
• Keen interest in Climate Change Adaptation, nature based solutions and environmental/developmental issues.
• Passion for making a difference in vulnerable communities
• Familiarity with the South African regulatory environment.
• A valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel.

Key responsibilities:

• Coordinate awareness, training and capacity building processes.
• Conceptualise and convene social learning processes, and manage knowledge harvesting and sharing.
• Support proposal development processes.
• Provide reporting and operational support.
