The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is offering four one year internships in Cape Town (1), Durban (1) and East London (2).
SANBI is mandated by the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (Act 10 of 2004) and its Regulations (Alien and Invasive Species Regulations, 2016) to promote the conservation of South Africa's biodiversity and also to monitor and report on invasive alien species.
In order to fulfil this mandate SANBI has teams working in all provinces, specifically focusing on Category 1a listed species and species on the SUSPECT list. Data needs to be collected, risk assessments undertaken, management plans developed, clearing of targeted species arranged and information supplied to the National Status Report.
The interns will be trained in invasive species research, which includes detection, fieldwork, data capturing, species management plans, risk assessments, and rapid response planning for a period of 12 months. In addition to training in all fields of work, each intern will be allocated a specific project, with the aim that the work will result in a peer reviewed scientific paper, with the intern as co-author, to build scientific capacity in the sector.
Who is eligible to apply?
We invite applications from graduates with an Honours degree in an appropriate Biological Science discipline (B Tech Nature Conservation will also be considered). Candidates should have a good command of spoken and written English, have experience in MS Office, and ideally a code B driver’s license with at least one year driving experience. Preference will be given to historically disadvantaged individuals.
Value of internship: The monthly stipend is fixed at R6 050 (B Tech completed), R7 150 (Honours completed) and R8 250 (Masters completed).
No other benefits apply as these are internship positions.
Duration: 1 August 2018 – 31 July 2019.
