Clinical Veterinarian

The National Zoological Garden (NZG) is looking for well-qualified, experienced, hard-working, enthusiastic and motivated person to be appointed as a Clinical Veterinarian.

The National Zoological Garden, South African Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires a highly motivated and energetic individual to function as a Clinical Veterinarian by conducting veterinary clinical diagnostics and treatment of animals in the collections. The NZG’s animal collections encompass more than 4000 specimens representing mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and other taxa.

Amongst others, the successful applicant will be expected to perform the following duties:

• Diagnose and treat sick and injured animals in the NZG animal collections and perform post-mortems
• Drive a comprehensive Preventive Medicine Program for the NZG animal collections
• Work closely with the Conservation and Animal Collection Directorate to maintain and improve animal health
• Initiate and carry out veterinary and related wildlife health projects, with a specific emphasis on conservation medicine
• Initiate and maintain national and international collaborations
• Liaise with external stakeholders such as the Faculty of Veterinary Science and wildlife veterinarians, zoos, wildlife managers, government departments, captive breeding programs, national and provincial parks, holders of private collections, and similar bodies in other southern African countries, to promote optimal animal health in free-ranging and captive wildlife
• Manage training programmes to promote animal health for zoo staff, visiting veterinary students and veterinarians in wildlife anaesthesia, disease diagnosis and zoo wildlife management
• Maintain veterinary medical records and adhere to relevant veterinary requirements
• Assist with research projects as and when required.

Minimum requirements: 

• BVSc degree (or equivalent)
• An MMedVet (Wildlife) degree or MSc in Veterinary Science is an added advantage
• Registered as a Veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council
• 3-5 years current clinical experience in wildlife medicine and surgery
• Competency of using a firearm. Proof of firearm competency certificate required.
• Excellent command of spoken and written English
• Computer literate
• Excellent health
• Valid driver’s licence.

Successful applicant must be prepared to undergo testing for allergies and TB and also vaccinations for tetanus, rabies and other needed vaccinations. A positive test will not preclude employment at the NZG.
