CREW Internship Programme: Masters

The South African National Biodiversity Institute is offering a one year internship to develop capacity in the implementation of certain aspects of the National Plant Conservation Strategy and supporting the CREW programme to expand into the Northern Cape. The strategy was developed by SANBI and a range of conservation stakeholders to ensure the effective conservation of plants in South Africa. The strategy consists of 5 high level objectives and 16 specific targets ranging from developing an electronic flora to building botanical capacity in the country.

The intern will assist in:

• Organising trips to survey critical habitat species, collate data and inputting into a technical report on the Taxa of Conservation Concern and priority areas identified in Target 5.
• Consulting literature and botanical experts to determine critical habitat species ecological requirements and develop methodology for conducting basic habitat condition assessments for these species.
• Engage communities in botanical hotspots in the Northern Cape to facilitate the establishment of CREW groups to monitor rare and threatened plant species. Conducting training sessions with volunteers on CREW monitoring and iNaturalist.

Who is eligible to apply?

We invite applications from graduates with a Masters degree with knowledge of Fynbos and Succulent Karoo plants. Candidates should have a good command of spoken and written English, have experience in MS Office, and ideally a code B driver’s license with at least one year driving experience. This internship is only available to South African citizens and will be awarded in line with national equity targets.

Value of internship

The stipend offered is fixed at R 9 900 per month (Masters completed). No other benefits apply as this is an internship position.
