CREW Programme Coordinator

The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) Programme; jointly funded by the Botanical Society of South Africa and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI); requires a highly professional candidate to assist with activities of the programme which involves citizen scientists from different socio economic backgrounds, and monitoring projects on South Africa’s or indigenous species.

We are seeking to appoint a young, enthusiastic person with an interest and passion for plant conservation. This job includes project management and some administrative tasks as well as rigorous fieldwork throughout the year, inclusive of some weekends and occasionally in adverse conditions.

This position requires the successful candidate to be in a possession of BSc Honours or MSc degree in Botany or Conservation Biology with at least 2 years’ experience. The incumbent must demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and exceptional accuracy in capturing data, must have an ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Plant identification and prior fieldwork experience will be highly advantageous. Good communication (written and verbal) skills are essential as well as proficiency in MS Excel in particular. Must be prepared to do outdoor activities and have a love for nature. A Code 08(B) driver’s license with at least 2 years driving experience is essential.

This is a 2 year contract.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Coordinating fieldtrips with CREW citizen scientists to collect information on plant species of conservation concern and providing information on target plant species
• Conducting quality control of CREW database
• Controlling the CREW specimen processing system
• Marketing the CREW programme by writing popular articles, updating CREW social media page, contributing to iNaturalist website
• Providing administrative support to the CREW programme
• Supporting manager by participating in key committees, workshops and meetings in the region.
