Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring Division – Threatened Species Unit

The CREW (Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers) programme is jointly implemented by the Botanical Society of South Africa (BOTSOC) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). CREW works with a network of citizen scientists to monitor and conserve Rare and Threatened plant species in South Africa.

The data collected by these citizen scientists are used in updating the South African Red List for plants, conservation planning and Land-use advice. CREW is seeking to appoint a project assistant to support the implementation of this exciting project in the Cape region.

The successful candidate must to be in possession of a Grade 12 certificate enhanced by 2 years’ relevant working experience in conservation or botany.  The ideal candidate must be well-organised, meticulous, detail orientated and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Knowledge about fynbos plants and prior fieldwork experience will be highly advantageous.

This position includes data capturing, plant specimen processing as well as intense fieldwork throughout the year, sometimes in adverse conditions. Good communication (written and verbal) skills are essential as well as proficiency in MS Office. Must be prepared to do outdoor activities and have a love for nature. In possession of a valid Code B/C1 driver’s license with one year’s practical driving experience is compulsory.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the management of CREW data and specimens;
  • Provide CREW volunteers with information on threatened plants to assist CREW monitoring activities;
  • Support CREW Manager in the implementation of Target 5 & 8 of the Plant conservation strategy;
  • Conduct plant monitoring field trips with CREW groups;
  • Update and monitor CREW social media profiles and iNaturalist projects.

SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary of R224 038.31.
