The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of efficient and enthusiastic persons with an interest in and knowledge of biodiversity collection curation to support the National Science Collections Facility (NSCF) by contributing to the integration of specimens into collections, specifically preserved plant specimens at the Bews Herbarium, UKZN, Pietermaritzburg, and ticks at the ARC at ARC, Onderstepoort in Pretoria.
The position requires candidates to have a three year tertiary qualification in biology enhanced by a minimum of two years’ relevant experience or Grade 12 with a minimum of five years’ experience related to biodiversity collection curation. The incumbent must demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and exceptional accuracy with capturing data, and must be proficient in MS Excel and be willing to work as part of a team. Experience in the use of Specify or BRAHMS software will be an advantage.
Key responsibilities
- Physical curation of specimens which includes sorting and preparation of specimens, labels and cover sheets
- Filing of specimens in the correct place in the collection
- Checking the specimens against specimen records in the BRAHMS or Specify database
- Adding information and images to the BRAHMS or Specify database where gaps have been identified.
SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary of R269 077.59 p.a.
