Deputy Director: Biodiversity Economy Projects

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to implement the annual programme of work on the biodiversity economy projects at SANBI to support the National Biodiversity Economy Strategy, the outcomes of the Biodiversity Lab and the projects relating to the biodiversity economy funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The position requires a postgraduate degree in Natural Sciences, Ecology, Zoology, or equivalent qualification with NQF 8. A postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification with NQF 9 will be an added advantage. The successful candidate must have 8 years’ experience in relevant field, of which 4 years’ should be in the first line management position(s) involving project management and/or related fields. The successful candidate must have:

• Understanding of research processes and outputs
• Knowledge of the science-policy interface
• Vast knowledge of biodiversity conservation priorities
• Comprehensive knowledge of the biodiversity economy
• Knowledge on the management of organisational finance at divisional level
• In-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation
• Knowledge about legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation
• Experience related to the management of projects involving collaborators from a number of institutions, substantial budgets and several project staff and interns.
• Knowledge of the National Biodiversity Economy Strategy and/or trade in biodiversity and/or wildlife management as well as knowledge of the relevant international Conventions will be advantageous.
• Excellent computer literacy and a good knowledge of Government, Human Resources, procurement, and financial management policies.
• Ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations and highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities.
• A valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

• Lead the implementation of the SANBI annual programme of work for the biodiversity economy, including coordinating the biodiversity economy Cross Functional Steering Committee and related committees, and ensuring relevant reporting is undertaken to Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment (DFFE) for biodiversity economy initiatives and the outcomes identified in the Biodiversity Economy Lab;
• Manage SANBI’s components of the GEF-funded biodiversity economy focused projects;
• Manage human resources, project finances, procurement, partners, and consultants as required;
• Contribute to SANBI’s strategic policy level engagement on biodiversity economy;
• Establish strong relationships, and networks with relevant stakeholders and partners; and
• Implement and drive change, Human Capital development and transformation within the Directorate
